Work Health & Safety: Multimedia
Maintaining operational safety within the library is absolutely vital. Please remember that there are several health and safety precautions advised for staff and visitors using multimedia equipment in the library.
Cords, cables, and hardware:
- Please ensure all cords, cables, and hardware are kept in good repair. Damaged cords, cables, or equipment should be removed or replaced immediately. Regular checks and maintenance should be performed to keep cords, cables, and hardware in excellent condition at all times.
- Secure any cords or cabling that crosses floor spaces to avoid creating trip hazards. If it’s not possible to avoid precarious positioning of cords or cables ensure they are taped or covered and that people in proximity are fully aware of the hazard.
Plugs, power, and electricity:
- Please us only the designated power points. When providing power to electronic devices use RCD safe ports to protect users and equipment from power surges.
- If using power boards, adaptors, or additional sockets ensure devices are not overloaded or chained in any way. Use devices as recommended by manufacturer and ensure all devices in use are in excellent condition.
Location, position, and precariousness:
- Ensure equipment and workspaces are positioned safely. Keep walkways clear. Avoid overloading or precarious loading of equipment on surfaces.
- Request assistance with heavy loads or use available trolleys or tools when manipulating heavy equipment.
Food, drink, and spillage:
- Please avoid having food or drink near electronic equipment. To remain hydrated while at a workstation use a water bottle that can be sealed between sips.
- If accidental mess or spillage occurs unplug immediately disconnect from power, and use all safety precautions while cleaning up the spillage. If moisture has entered an electronic device call technical services immediately for assistance.
Workstation and ergonomics:
- For personal health and safety it is important to maintain an ergonomic workspace where possible. Ensure office chairs, desks, keyboards, monitors, and peripherals are positioned for best posture.
- Take regular breaks, particularly with regard to screen time. Allow opportunities for eyesight to adapt to both short and long range exposures by raises gaze from screen frequently. Take breaks from repetitive activities regularly and before pain begins. Get up and move regularly and avoid long sedentary shifts.
